Bio

Lillian Hull is a visual artist and costume maker. Lillian’s artistic practise spans several mediums including digital illustration, textile art and photography. Her work is often inspired by nature and the rhythmic motions of pattern making.

As a Maiawali artist, Lillian grew up on Ngunnawal Country in Canberra, undertook her studies at Charles Sturt University on Wiradjuri Country, and is currently living on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country in Melbourne.

Lillian thinks about her mark making almost like it is a representation of herself in the current moment. Although her art can reference popular Indigenous memes (eg Live Laugh Land Back), broadly her practice lives in the abstract. Lillian does not always know what she is painting until it appears to her in the image.

Lillian says “Everything has a rhythm - from bark to clouds to bricks on the wall. I have always been a Blak Settler, and this influences how I think about my artistic work and what I am inspired by. Growing up, Mum urged us to reduce/reuse/recycle and to try our best to tread lightly. So when I make art I try to repurpose items as much as possible, and reduce waste where I can.”

Around her in rays are doodles that are white/hot pink/orange/yellow. The background is a darker orange.
